Parks Canada is reminding the public to stay out of two closed beach areas inside Kejimkujik National Park Seaside on Nova Scotia’s South Shore.
A recent social media post said park management continues to receive reports of people trespassing on St. Catherines River Beach and Little Port Joli Beach within the oceanfront park south of Liverpool. Both areas remain closed until further notice to protect piping plovers during their nesting season.
Andy Sharpe, the resource conservation manager of Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, said the areas are marked with signage and cordoned off with rope barriers, but people are still occasionally entering them.
Access to the two beaches is typically restricted between April and August to ensure the small shorebirds, which have been an endangered species since 1985, are not disturbed during their nesting period.
“We developed some fairly good data to confirm that keeping people [and] dogs off those beaches has a significant impact on their success,” said Sharpe.
He said the public should always have dogs on a leash within the park and should collect garbage to avoid attracting predators to the birds and their eggs.
People who break the restrictions may face enforcement actions, including fines, he said.
