Surrey’s National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration is returning to the traditional lands of the Semiahmoo First Nation.
Semiahmoo First Nation will be hosting National Indigenous Peoples Day at Semiahmoo Park, 15782 Marine Dr. on June 19. Last year’s celebration was held in partnership with the City of Surrey at Cloverdale’s Bill Reid Amphitheatre.
“Bringing this event home is deeply meaningful to us. On June 19, we will gather in celebration of culture, community, and the enduring strength of Indigenous peoples,” Semiahmoo First Nation said in a statement posted on social media.

“It is an opportunity to celebrate who we are, where we come from, and the vibrant future we continue to build together,” continued the statement by the Semiahmoo First Nation.

“We have some very special secret guests who are going to be coming and performing later in the evening,” Semiahmoo First Nation Chief, Harley Chappell, shared with Peace Arch News.
The statement proceeds to say that by hosting this celebration, they will do so with a renewed vision that is grounded in their cultural teaching and holds a commitment to creating lasting and inclusive experiences for all that attend.
“We see this as a continuation of the strong relationships that have been built, and we would be honoured to carry this work forward together,” finished the statement.
