Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are to reprise their roles in a long-awaited sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
The original film, released in 1997, followed best friends Romy and Michele as they returned to their home town for a school reunion and invented elaborate lies in an attempt to impress their former classmates.
The cult comedy also starred Janeane Garofalo and Alan Cumming, with a cameo from Justin Theroux.
An Instagram post from 20th Century Studios announced that the sequel was in production, showing Kudrow and Sorvino in costume, sitting in director’s chairs bearing the names Romy and Michele.
The post was captioned: “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”
Sorvino wrote in the comments: “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!’”
A sequel to the film has long been discussed, and Kudrow and Sorvino marked the film’s 25th anniversary at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2022.
The pair wore coordinated blue and pink suits in a nod to their outfits from the film as they presented the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
In the film, Kudrow’s character Michele wears a pale pink dress to the reunion, while Sorvino’s Romy wears electric blue.
The actors also recreated the voices of their characters on stage, with Sorvino telling Kudrow: “You look cute.”
Kudrow replied: “I know, thanks. So do you, of course. Do you think this is the cutest anyone’s ever looked at an awards show?”
Sorvino continued: “I just realised this: we’re wearing great ensembles while at the same time presenting to great ensembles.”
The pair also held up a stack of Post-it notes, a reference to Romy and Michele pretending they had invented the sticky note pads in an attempt to impress their former classmates.
The original film’s screenwriter Robin Schiff has reportedly returned to write the sequel, with Garofalo, Cumming, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell also reported to be reprising their roles.
