It’s been another disappointing clay court season for British tennis players with no Brits making it to the second week of Roland Garros in singles. However, there were some bright sparks as Cameron Norrie got to the fourth round in Madrid where he had the opportunity to test himself against Jannik Sinner. Meanwhile, Katie Boulter and Francesca Jones both won matches at Roland Garros and put up encouraging displays in their second round matches. Now, it’s time to assess where things went wrong for the Brits and where everyone is heading into the most important time of the year as the tour moves to grass.
Men’s Singles Cameron Norrie [20]
It was a consistent clay court season for Norrie who produced a deep runs in Barcelona and Madrid. However, an injury suffered in Geneva derailed the British number one’s hopes at Roland Garros as he had to retire for one of the first times in his career. A race against time now awaits Norrie who had a promising clay court season as he now aims to be fit for Wimbledon, where he reached the quarter-finals last year.

Jacob Fearnley
The clay continued to be a struggle for Jacob Fearnley although the Brit did qualify for Rome. A defeat to Sinner’s conqueror Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the opening round doesn’t look so bad from a distance as the Brit aims to recover his position in the world’s top 100 in the grass court season.

An incredible achievement from Toby Samuel as he qualified for Roland Garros and got to test himself against one of the world’s best. The Brit will hope to carry that confidence into the grass court season as he targets a main draw wildcard at Wimbledon.

A great achievement for Liam Broady to get himself in a position to compete at Roland Garros qualifying. A first qualifying round defeat will be disappointing but Broady will thrive on competing on grass once again as he has had good results in the past.

Jan Choinski
It was a long and decent clay court season for Jan Choinski who competed at more ATP qualifying events this season. The Brit won a Challenger title in Zagreb but would have been disappointed to withdraw from Roland Garros qualifying. Now, Choinski will aim to recover from that disappointment as he has an automatic main draw entry to Wimbledon and will aim to build on winning his first match at SW19 a couple of years ago.

There were some incredible performances from Arthur Fery including reaching the semi-finals of the Zagreb Challenger. The Brit is improving with every year and has continued to show why he is such an awkward player to play against.
