A 33-year-old man has been charged with arson after allegedly setting merchandise on fire at a downtown store.

Winnipeg police say a man entered the store in the 200 block of Portage Avenue at around 6:55 p.m. on May 5. He set some merchandise on fire before fleeing. 

The fire quickly spread, causing significant damage to the property and merchandise

Security at the store quickly extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported. 

Investigators identified the suspect, and a warrant for arrest was issued.

On June 4, the suspect was arrested at the Winnipeg Remand Centre on the strength of the warrant. He was already in custody on an unrelated matter. 

He is now facing new charges, including arson, causing damage to property and failure to comply with probation x 2.

He remains in custody.
