CHILLIWACK – Mounties in Chilliwack say a 21-year-old Surrey man has been arrested and formally charged for his alleged role which an 88-year-old victim lost a substantial amount of money through a grandparent scam.

According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Constable Hannah Sutton, police in Chilliwack launched a fraud investigation in October 2025 after receiving a report that an elderly woman had been defrauded out of a “significant” sum of money in which authorities commonly call a “grandparent scam.” Police were first notified about the incident on October 11, 2025.

Constable Sutton says the victim reportedly received a phone call from an individual she believed to be her grandson who claimed that he required money for bail.

Police say the victim gave a substantial amount cash to an individual whom she was directed to meet in person. When more money was requested, the victim became suspicious and reported the incident to police.
