Lachine added to list of Montreal areas under water-saving effort

Montreal is expanding its water conservation request to include the borough of Lachine.

On Thursday, the city said in a statement that officials determined Lachine’s drinking water network could not be isolated from systems supplied by the Atwater and Charles-J.-Des Baillets water-treatment plants.

It comes as part of a broader water-conservation effort launched May 29 after three major water distribution lines were taken out of service simultaneously, the city said.

Montreal has already suspended activities that use large amounts of water, including pipe flushing, and has restricted certain activities such as decorative fountains and non-essential watering.

Residents are being asked to reduce outdoor water use, avoid unnecessary cleaning with drinking water and follow the city’s drinking water bylaw.

The city said additional measures, including a watering ban, could be introduced depending on how the situation evolves.
