The wait is over, Toronto food lovers. Taste of the Danforth is coming back.
The popular Greektown street festival will return this summer, with the province and city spending $200,000 each to help bring it back, the Ontario government announced in a news release Thursday.
Taste of the Danforth was cancelled the last two years after organizers reported a loss of more than $250,000 in 2023.
“Our government is proud to invest in the return of this historic festival so families, friends and neighbours can experience the very best of Toronto’s Greektown,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in the release.
Taste of the Danforth started in 1993 and is organized by the Greektown on the Danforth Business Improvement Area. The 2026 festival will run from Aug. 7 to 9, the province said.
Earlier this year, a Toronto council committee responded to concerns from several organizations about challenges arising from the loss of sponsors and increasing costs — including Taste of Danforth — by creating a new city festival strategy that advocated for provincial and federal funding.
Ford said in February the province would look to support the festival this year.
Mayor Olivia Chow thanked the Ontario government on Thursday for its support.
“This festival is one of Toronto’s most beloved summer traditions, bringing people together to celebrate Greek culture, support local businesses, and experience the diversity that makes our city so vibrant,” she said in a separate city release.
The festival is expected to draw at least 1 million visitors, the city said in the release.
The festival is bouncing back after having taken some hits so far this decade. Organizers previously cancelled the festival in 2020, 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
