Hurricanes soccer team enters Surrey Sports Hall of Fame

Tenth in a series of 10 profiles of 2026 Surrey Sports Hall of Fame inductees, celebrated as the hall’s inaugural class during a June 2 ceremony at Surrey City Hall.
BC Tigers Hurricanes of 2018, Game Changer
The Hurricanes’ journey began in 2005 when the Punjab Hurricanes entered the Vancouver Metro Soccer League (VMSL) in Division 3. Made up largely of first-generation Canadians of South Asian descent, the team steadily rose through the ranks, reaching the Premier Division by 2010 and establishing Newton Athletic Park as their home.
Their breakthrough came in 2018, when they captured a rare triple: the VMSL Premier Division title, the BC Provincial “A” Cup, and a berth at the Canada Soccer National Championships. Their A Cup victory followed an exciting extra-time win over Langley United.
At nationals in Saskatoon, the Hurricanes drew their opener before winning three straight matches to reach the final against unbeaten Caledon SC. On October 8, 2018, they delivered a historic 7–3 victory to claim the Challenge Trophy—the first senior men’s national club title for a BC team in 14 years and the first ever by a South Asian team in the event’s history. They also earned the Fair Play Award and were later inducted as a Team of Distinction by the BC Soccer Hall of Fame in 2025.
Their victory resonated far beyond the field, inspiring South Asian communities in Surrey and across Canada while marking a milestone for representation in Canadian soccer.
