VANCOUVER — Vancouver’s streets are flooded with green, gold, red and white as Australian and Turkish fans pour into BC Place stadium for their World Cup match tonight.
Chanting fans have been setting off smoke canisters in their national colours as Vancouver takes its turn in the global spotlight, for the first of seven matches to be played in the city.
There’s a heavy security presence outside the stadium, with dozens of police visible, some carrying long guns.
Downtown Vancouver has been heaving with supporters for the first weekend of the world’s biggest sporting event, including Granville Street that has been closed to vehicles until the conclusion of the tournament on July 19.
