The Saskatchewan Roughriders opened the curtain on their 2026 season and on the franchise’s fifth Grey Cup championship banner on Saturday.

Prior to the Roughriders’ down-to-the-wire 31-27 victory the B.C. Lions, three members of the 2025 Saskatchewan team — receivers Dohnte Meyers and Mitch Picton, along with long snapper Jorgen Hus — unveiled the banner before 30,168 spectators at Mosaic Stadium.

“This is for you,” Meyers told the crowd, “and this is for the province.”

Meyers signed with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals after a 65-catch, 1,056-yard breakout season with Saskatchewan in 2025. Picton and Hus both retired as CFL players in May.

The Roughriders then burst out of the gate, assuming a 14-0 lead on back-to-back touchdown passes from Trevor Harris to Samuel Emilus. They connected for majors of 11 and four yards.

Alex Hale added his first field goal as a Roughrider — a 35-yarder — to help Saskatchewan lead 17-10 at halftime.

The Lions’ first-half points resulted from a 15-yard TD run by Nathan Rourke, converted by Sean Whtye, and a 25-yard field goal.

Hale’s 16-yard field goal at 6:06 of the third quarter increased Saskatchewan’s lead to 20-10.

The Lions countered with a three-yard touchdown run by James Butler, who scored midway through the third quarter. Whyte’s convert reduced the Lions’ deficit to three points.

Hale’s single on a missed 43-yard field-goal attempt gave Saskatchewan a 21-17 lead on the final play of the third quarter.

Whyte’s 23-yard field goal, at 4:02 of the fourth quarter, made it a one-point game in favour of Saskatchewan.

Hale’s 22-yard field goal, set up by a 52-yard pass from Harris to Kian Schaffer-Baker, gave the Roughriders a 24-20 lead.

Butler gave B.C. its first lead of the game when he plunged one yard for a TD on third down at 11:18 of the fourth quarter. Whyte’s convert put the Lions ahead 27-24.

Saskatchewan responded with an 11-play, 82-yard drive that was punctuated by Emilus’s third TD catch of the game. Hale’s convert gave Saskatchewan a 31-27 advantage with 48 seconds left.

The outcome was not decided until the final play, when Rourke’s pass from Saskatchewan’s 33-yard line fell incomplete.

Harris was 30-for-36 for 417 yards, with a quarterback efficiency rating of 147.6,

Schaffer-Baker registered regular-season career highs of 11 catches and 165 receiving yards. KeeSean Johnson added nine catches for 131 yards.

Antoine Brooks Jr. was the Roughriders’ leader in defensive tackles, with 12. Jameer Thurman added eight stops. Aubrey Miller Jr. paced Saskatchewan in special teams tackles (three).

The Roughriders are to return to action on June 20 against the host Calgary Stampeders.

Emilus and Grant are among seven players who have scored the Roughriders’ first two TDs in an opener.

• Rookie Roughriders defensive end Desmond Evans registered his first CFL sack. James Vaughters also had a sack for Saskatchewan.
