Reports suggest that Serena is being considered for the revamped US Open mixed doubles event, potentially alongside none other than Carlos Alcaraz. Discussions are reportedly ongoing regarding the participation of the high profile pairing, while another star duo could see Venus Williams team up with Jannik Sinner.
The possibility is hardly surprising given the mutual admiration that Serena and Alcaraz have expressed over the years.
“I’m actually a huge fan of Alcaraz, so every time he wins I reach out to tell him, ‘great job, I was rooting for you,'” Serena said last year while receiving the Princess of Asturias Award.
The potential partnership would provide a major boost for a tournament that introduced a groundbreaking mixed doubles format in 2025. The competition features 16 teams, with eight qualifying through rankings and eight receiving wild cards, competing over two days before the start of the singles draws.
Last year’s edition proved highly successful. Alcaraz teamed up with Emma Raducanu, Novak Djokovic partnered Olga Danilovic, Daniil Medvedev played alongside Mirra Andreeva, and Casper Ruud joined forces with Iga Swiatek, among other headline pairings. The positive reception has encouraged organizers to pursue even more historic combinations this year.
The biggest threat to the initiative, however, could come from player unrest. Several players have raised concerns about prize money distribution at the US Open, a debate that first gained momentum during Roland Garros. While tensions have eased temporarily at Wimbledon following the tournament’s efforts to increase its prize fund, the issue remains unresolved and could still impact participation in New York.
