The OPP officer killed in the line of duty in northern Ontario last week will be laid to rest Thursday.

OPP are releasing the details about the funeral for Constable Tarun Bali.

The 29-year-old was struck and killed by a vehicle during an investigation in Hearst, about 520 kilometres east of Thunday Bay, on Tuesday, June 9.

He was assigned to the Dufferin Detachment, but was on deployment to the James Bay Detachment at the time. Bali was with the force for two-and-a-half years.

Bali’s funeral will take place at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre at 5500 Rose Cherry Place on Thursday, June 18 at 10:30 a.m.

The visitation and funeral service are not open to the general public. Fellow OPP officers, members of other police services, Bali’s family and guests, and other emergency services, military and dignitary officials will be attending the event.

There will be a designated location for watching the funeral cortege escort in person and the event will also be live-streamed.

Anyone who wants to send flowers can have them delivered to Kane-Jerrett Funeral Homes at 8088 Yonge Street in Thornhill.

There is an online book of condolences and others are available in the lobby of the OPP detachments in Orangeville and Primrose (Shelburne).

Bali was born in Nangal, Punjab, India. OPP say he was a proud Canadian citizen and a dedicated, enthusiastic officer with a strong sense of community. He volunteered supporting Peel Region Victim Services and was part of the Sur-Taal Heritage Organization. He also spoke multiple languages including Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu.

The force says his commitment and contributions will not be forgotten and “he will forever be a hero in life.”
