Action movie icon Jason Statham has found another global streaming hit, with the actor and martial artist’s most recent effort hitting the charts with a bang. The Stath is back and doing what he does best: carrying out brutal revenge as he treads wonderfully familiar ground as a mysterious stranger hiding from a violent past who is called back into action.

Statham continues to wave the flag for no-nonsense action movie thrills, with the 58-year-old actor and martial artist showing no signs of slowing down as he delivers several explosive efforts this year, next, and beyond. The latest was sadly overlooked at the box office, but is now finding redemption on streaming as it climbs its way up the top 10 on Prime Video.

A Rare Box Office Bomb for Jason Statham

Hitting theaters back in January, Shelter was surprisingly overlooked despite the reliable star power of The Stath. Starring Statham alongside Bodhi Rae Breathnach (Hamnet), Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice), and Daniel Mays (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), our story begins with Statham’s mysterious character, Mason, living like a hermit on a remote coastal island. When the reclusive man rescues a young girl (Breathnach) from a deadly storm, he draws them both into danger and must confront his turbulent past while protecting her, hurling them on a tense journey of survival and redemption. With lots of viscerally choreographed fist fights.

Shelter became a rare box office bomb for Jason Statham, ending its theatrical run with around $53.9 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $50 million. Deservedly, Shelter is now finding an audience on streaming, with the action thriller slowly fighting its way up the global Prime Video top 10 and currently standing at #7 alongside other action fare Crime 101, Greenland 2: Migration, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War.

“Another Statham Masterpiece!”

Shelter bombing is baffling, as the action thriller hits all the right beats as Statham once again wages a one-man war…only this time with a young girl in tow. The movie even features some of Statham’s best fight scenes, including an intense throwdown with John Wick: Chapter 4 stunt performer Bryan Vigier (which you can bask in above), with audiences at least responding highly positively in their reactions, if not parting with their cash.

“Really enjoy a good Jason Statham action film. This does not disappoint,” reads one five-star reaction on Rotten Tomatoes, with others adding, “Amazing, & Very Serious Action Adventure Film,” “I enjoyed the movie it was good full of action,” and “Another Statham masterpiece!” All of which has resulted in a seriously solid score of 87% from audiences on the Popcornmeter, alongside a slightly more middling 64% from critics.

With Shelter now proving to be yet another streaming hit from Jason Statham, the genre superstar has plenty of action thrills in the pipeline, including this year’s Mutiny, which finds the actor taking over a cargo ship on a hunt for revenge and is set to be released on Aug. 21. The actor is also due to reunite with director Guy Ritchie on the long-awaited crime thriller Viva La Madness; will lead director David Leitch’s meta-comedy Jason Statham Stole My Bike on Aug. 6, 2027; and is set to return as shady assassin Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, which is due to debut on Jan. 15, 2027.
