The Samuel Montembeault situation is taking a new turn, as the Edmonton Oilers are back in the picture.
The Oilers have reportedly shown significant interest in the Montreal Canadiens goaltender.
It was the excellent Maxime Truman who reported the information.
An update that reignites speculation surrounding the Quebec native.
According to his information, Edmonton’s interest appears to be very real.
The Oilers have reportedly contacted the Canadiens regarding Montembeault, they have picked up the phone again, and there are serious reasons to believe discussions along those lines are ongoing.
That being said, Truman adds some important context.
The Oilers are reportedly not the only team that has called the Canadiens about the goaltender.
Edmonton is also believed to be considering other options.
Montembeault is reportedly not the only netminder on the Alberta organization’s radar.
Even so, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a genuine possibility Montembeault could be traded to the Edmonton Oilers.
Strong interest from the Edmonton Oilers in Montreal Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault
The goaltending situation in Montreal remains crowded, with Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler more than ever in the picture, making it increasingly interesting for Kent Hughes to consider moving a player like Montembeault.
Montembeault has reportedly fallen to third on the depth chart.
At $3.15 million for one more season, his future with the club was already generating discussion.
Interest like Edmonton’s could certainly influence the situation.
Some argued that the Canadiens should keep him as insurance, but an attractive offer could change the equation.
You can see Truman’s comments here:
“According to my information, the Oilers would have significant interest in Samuel Montembeault.
Note: the Oilers aren’t the only ones who have called the Habs about Montembeault, and the latter isn’t the only goalie on their radar.
However, there is clearly a path that could lead to a trade. To be continued.”
It remains to be seen whether this interest will lead to a trade.
Truman himself urges caution, as nothing has been finalized at this point.
However, with several teams reportedly making inquiries, Kent Hughes may soon have to make a decision regarding the future of his Quebec-born goaltender.
