The low-budget action thriller answer to both John Wick and The Punisher has unleashed an explosive new trailer as the digital streaming release date looms. Boasting everything necessary for a gloriously white-knuckle throwback that takes zero prisoners while doling out righteous violence in the name of revenge and redemption, the action outing introduces an almost mythical protagonist with a particular set of skills who finds himself fighting to bring law and order to a town in chaos.
Directed by Chee Keong Cheung, the action thriller in question is Son of the Soil, which stars Razaaq Adoti (Black Hawk Down, Amistad) in what could quickly become a breakout leading role as a former soldier who returns home with a mission of revenge after his sister is murdered. Taking the legendary reputation of Baba Yaga and combining it with the tactical talents and vigilante efforts of Marvel’s Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, Son of the Soil promises to be a major genre hit when it becomes available to rent or buy next month.
A haunted Nigerian ex-commando (Adoti) is dragged back into a world of violence when his sister’s death leads him to a murderous drug network tearing his community apart – his mission objective is simple. Redemption.
Starring Patience Ozokwo (Old School), Ireti Doyle (The Arbitration) and Taye Arimoro (Gangs of Lagos), Sunshine Rosman (To Kill a Monkey), Damilola Ogunsi (Gangs of Lagos), Emeka Golden (Evi) and Sharon Rotimi (The Wives), and newcomer Ijelu Folajimi alongside Razaaq Adoti, Son of the Soil is a collaboration between the UK and Nigeria and is expected to be a major win for Nollywood having already been awarded three Black Star International Film Festival awards for Best Film, Director, and International Showcase, and was selected for the 34th Pan-African Film Festival (PAFF).

Following its limited theatrical release, Son of the Soil is also available to stream on 
Netflix in some territories, including Africa, with the newly released trailer confirming that the action thriller will be available to stream on digital platforms in the United States on July 14, and in the United Kingdom the day before on July 13.
While Son of the Soil continues to fly under the radar, for now, at least, the reviews and reactions that have emerged have praised the movie’s throwback approach, hailing it as a “rough and ready low budget action film making and has an undoubted appeal for genre fans,” a “scrappy gangland action romp, mixing Nollywood energy with bloody set pieces and a dash of 80s-style grit,” and a “visually stylish and gritty white-knuckle action thriller.”
