Jaylen Brown has been a huge part of this Celtics era for almost 10 years. But with trade rumors heating up, there is growing talk that Boston may eventually have to make a tough choice.
A lot of that speculation comes from the Celtics being linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo. If Milwaukee ever decides to move him, Boston is often mentioned as a team that could get involved. And in almost every version of that idea, Brown is the name that comes up as the key piece in a deal.
That is not hard to understand. Brown is one of the most valuable players Boston could offer. He is still in his prime, he has made five All-Star teams, and he has already shown he can deliver when it matters most. He won Finals MVP during the Celtics’ 2024 title run, and he followed that up with another top-level season while taking on even more offensively.
The issue is simple; landing a player like Giannis would almost certainly cost Boston something major. Around the league, Brown is widely seen as the most realistic player to include in that kind of trade, especially since the Celtics are not expected to consider moving Jayson Tatum, even while he recovers from a ruptured Achilles.
Because of that, Brown’s future in Boston is now being discussed in a bigger context. This is no longer about whether he is good enough to help lead a contender. He has already proven that. The real question is whether the Celtics believe a Tatum-Giannis pairing gives them a better chance to win than the Tatum-Brown duo that already brought Banner 18 to Boston.
At this point, nothing has changed. Brown is still a Celtic, and no deal has been made. But with the draft getting closer, the rumors are only getting louder. If Boston seriously goes after Giannis, Brown will likely stay at the center of that conversation. If not, the Celtics could head into next season with one of the league’s best duos still together.
