Hamilton, Niagara, Brantford and surrounding areas could get heavy rain and thunderstorms Wednesday night, according to Environment Canada.

The weather agency’s statement said the regions could get rainfall amounts of up to 40 mm starting early Wednesday evening and continuing overnight.

“There is a potential for severe thunderstorms late this evening and overnight with heavy rain and strong wind gusts being the primary threats,” said Environment Canada.

The Niagara Region is also under a yellow wind warning, with possible southwesterly winds of up to 90 km/h.

The warning said local utility outages and damage to property, trees, or soft shelters is possible.

Heavy winds are also expected in the Hamilton and Brantford area, but the federal agency said warnings may be issued “closer to the event as the path of this low pressure system becomes more certain.”

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority warned of potential flooding for the southeastern portion of the City of Hamilton, and the eastern portion of Haldimand County due to the forecast weather.
