There are few quarterbacks in NFL history like Justin Fields.

The New York Jets made him their starting quarterback for this season, and he brings an element rarely seen in pro football.

Fields, as everyone knows, is adept at running the football.

But just how good at that is he?

He’s one of three QBs in NFL history to average 50 rushing yards or more per game. The other two are Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels, per NBC’s Matthew Berry.

Fields specifically has averaged 50.2 rushing yards per game in his career, and that’d be higher if not for a few late-season quick cameos with the Steelers in 2024.

His best came in 2022, when he put up 76.2 rushing yards per game with the Bears.

Berry shared the stat in a fantasy football context. Fields is a great pick there because of how running QBs can quickly rack up points.

But for the Jets in general, it’s a key component that they simply haven’t had.

They’ve gone from a 40-year old Aaron Rodgers coming off a torn Achilles to a 26-year old Fields who runs with the ball in his hands like an athletic 6-foot-3 wide receiver.

The Jets’ overall success will likely depend on how efficient Fields can be as a passer. But if they lean into Fields’ running, that can raise their team’s floor. He just makes life so tough on opposing defenses. They have to account for a whole different element than they do with the majority of quarterbacks.

If nothing else, Fields should be an exciting addition to the Jets. And if things go well, New York could have quite the run in its sights.
