Between The Lines: Benson’s CFL passport adds another stamp with Saskatchewan Roughriders

With apologies to country legend Hank Snow, he may have been everywhere, but new Saskatchewan Roughriders long-snapper Mike Benson might have him beat.

When Benson signed with the Riders this week, it marked the seventh CFL team of his career. At this point, the Winnipeg native jokes it’s easier to list where he hasn’t played.

“Yeah, the Mike Benson around the world trip is almost complete,” Benson joked. “I had a few guys ask where were you before this, and I’m like, well it’s easier to tell you where I haven’t been.”

The veteran specialist said despite the stops across the league, his first impressions in Saskatchewan have been positive.

“It’s nice to be here. It’s a beautiful stadium. Everyone’s been welcoming so far. I’m excited to get going.”

The only CFL stops Benson hasn’t made are Calgary and Hamilton. His arrival with the Riders came together quickly. Benson said he got the call and made the decision to drive to Saskatchewan rather than fly.

“They asked if I wanted to fly or drive, and I chose to drive just so I can have the truck here. I had about five and a half hours to myself to game plan, get back in the mindset and get some assurances in.”

For a player entering his 13th CFL season, Benson said adapting to a new team isn’t nearly as difficult as people might think.

“You know what, football, especially in Canada, all the rules are finite and everything’s staying the same,” Benson said. “Nothing changes. I still throw the ball between my legs, and someone has to kick it.”

Now settled in Green and White, Benson says the transition has been smooth thanks to familiar faces and a professional environment.

“These guys operate absolutely as professional as possible, and it’s been a great few hours of experience.”

Benson and the Roughriders visit Calgary to take on the Stampeders on Saturday.
