Amazon’s all-new action thriller takes elements of two icons from across the ages, Batman and Rambo, and smashes them together to create an unstoppable force of justice and revenge. Streaming often allows lesser-known genre pictures to find success they likely wouldn’t have had any other way, and such is the case here, with the explosive Prime Video effort becoming one of the streamer’s most-watched original movies.

Introducing an action hero with the skills of Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo and the ludicrous fortune of Bruce Wayne, Vengeance leaves the cape and cowl behind but maintains the drive as it unleashes a new vigilante on a relentless quest for the titular mission.

A Special Forces Hero Wages War After His Wife Is Murdered

Clocking in at 103 minutes, Vengeance begins when a decorated special forces hero discovers his wife has been brutally murdered. As is tradition in these cinematic cases, this leaves him with only one purpose: vengeance. After an unexpected twist of fate makes him a millionaire, he soon turns his fortune into an arsenal and launches a relentless hunt for those responsible.

Directed by Rodrigo Valdés, Vengeance (aka, Venganza) hails from Mexico and is an original film from Amazon Studios. Led by Omar Chaparro and Alejandro Speitzer, the studio has called Vengeance one of Prime Video’s “most ambitious” action thriller projects in Latin America, which was given the resources necessary to deliver blockbuster-style action sequences. And this investment has now paid off, with Vengeance being confirmed as one of the streamer’s most-watched releases from the last few weeks. You can check out the top 10 below:

‘Vengeance’ Is “Pure Entertainment” Perfect for ‘John Wick’ Fans

While it has clearly enticed a lot of viewers with its no-nonsense title and synopsis, Vengeance has struggled where reviews and reactions are concerned. “Vengeance is a product designed for pure entertainment,” reads one reaction, with another hailing it as “a rollicking revenge thriller with some great action sequences and characters that come down to a dazzling climax by the end of its brutally efficient narrative.”

The biggest criticisms are leveled at the evident low-budget and lack of original ideas. Critiqued for being too “unrealistic,” Vengeance is still “entertaining for those who crave for bloody and brutal action sequences in the line of JOHN WICK” with “a sturdy balance of plot, character and movement, with a handful of well-executed set pieces inspired by many films that came before it.” So, while it may not be all that original, Vengeance clearly offers enough for audiences watching at home and eager for another cathartic tale of revenge.
