Winnipeg police chief is expected to provide an update Friday afternoon following an overnight incident in which an officer discharged a firearm.
Chief Gene Bowers was scheduled to speak at police headquarters at 12:30 p.m., according to a notice issued by the Winnipeg police.
Authorities have released few details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) told CityNews in a statement:
“Health and safety of our members is our top priority. In recent years, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) has seen a concerning increase in the number of violent incidents involving frontline responders. In 2025, WFPS members filed 109 reports regarding violent incidents and/or threats of violence in the workplace. This was down since 2024 when there 209 reports filed. We believe there are a number of factors for this reduction including updated staging and dispatch policies. As well, we believe that incidents involving threats or verbal abuse may be under-reported.”
More to come.
