Photo contest winners: results of the Comox Valley Land Trust’s fifth annual contest

The results of the Comox Valley Land Trust’s photo contest are in! Now in its 5th year, the contest had nearly 100 people submitting their best images. The number and quality of the photographs meant that the judges had a difficult time picking just three.
Megan Firth won first prize for her “window to the wild” photograph of two hummingbird chicks in their nest. The judges loved its mood, lighting, and technical excellence, and appreciated the difficulty of taking that shot.
Hadrien Jouet, a local photographer, won second prize for “wet raccoon,“ which is not only sharp and well composed but also has a comedic element that the judges found compelling. This was Hadrien’s third year placing in the contest.
The third-place image “spawn wave “was taken by Taylor Burk, a Vancouver Island photographer. The judges were wowed by its composition and technical acuity. A wave of herring spawn in a churning sea brings a raw energy to this image.
The judging panel was comprised of three talented local photographers: Jenn Dykstra, Scott Bell, and Tim Ennis. Prizes were provided by London Drugs, Mount Washington Alpine Resort and Comox Valley Kayaks and Canoes.
This contest was founded to celebrate nature as a defining feature of the Comox Valley – something worth preserving. As a charity that works to conserve and restore nature, the Comox Valley Land Trust has played a significant role in protecting more than 670 hectares of ecologically significant land since 1999.
