Surrey Pride festival celebrates community and inclusion

Hundreds of people filled the plaza outside of Central City mall Saturday (June 20) for the 27th annual Surrey Pride festival
The free event runs from noon until 7 p.m. and features drag performances, live music, and speeches from various politicians.
Kwantlen First Nation Elder Kevin Kelly opened up the festival.
“It’s a beautiful day today, and I think it’s really important when we have days like this in our way, we call it a potlatch, that’s a feast. This is the way it should be to bring your families together, to bring the young ones together, share a meal, have a good time, check out the vendors, and just enjoy your day. Sometimes we need days like this just to slow us down as human beings,” Kelly said.
There were over 60 vendors from various buisnesses, political parties and organizations that had set up tents at the event.

Various politicians were also in attendance, including Surrey mayor Brenda Locke, MLAs Amna Shah, Garry Begg and Jessie Sunner, MPs Randeep Sarai and Jill McKnight, and Senator Baltej Dhillon.
Mayor Locke said, “The 2SLGBTQ+ community is such a vital part of Surrey, your strength, your creativity, your leadership…you helped to shape this city, and that is so very important. We are stronger when we stand together in inclusion, when we make sure everyone, everyone feels welcome and knows that they belong.”
