Surrey council to vote on 32-metre telecom tower for Fleetwood

Surrey council will vote June 29 on whether to permit the development of a 32-metre (105-foot-tall) telecommunications tower at 17023 88 Avenue in Fleetwood.

According to Ron Gill, Surrey’s general manager of planning and development, the proposed tower “avoids actively farmed land,” would be situated on an arterial road and wouldn’t be located in a sensitive ecosystem area.

Gill noted Surrey’s zoning bylaw permits telecommunications towers up to 20 metres high on agricultural land and this one requires a variance.

“Staff do not anticipate any significant negative impacts on the neighbourhood to result from the proposed variance,” Gill noted in a planning report.

The subject site is nearly two hectares and located on the north side of 88 Avenue opposite of Charles Richardson Nature Reserve.

“The site currently contains one single family dwelling and various farm buildings with the second single family dwelling under construction,” Gill noted.

There will be no public hearing on this proposal.
