Jordi offered a very detailed argument why the FIA cannot realistically offer a better solution to the problems created by the Monaco Grand Prix penalties than the current one. Read the full comment here and the conclusion below:
The effect on the race wasn’t even that massive. At worst Piastri lost a position, and Gasly gained two. Mercedes being dumb amplified the whole affair because Russell got a drive-through when he could have been in the podium regardless of the time penalty. That was the big one, and that was all on Mercedes.
So yeah, just let Gasly keep his podium. It’s the least bad option of a bunch of terrible options. Maybe have the FIA pay a fine to the teams who got a wrong penalty, and then review the pit speed measurements so it doesn’t happen again.
