Surrey police watchdog concludes 2023 traffic crash file

A Surrey-based police watchdog has concluded its investigation into a 2023 traffic crash and won’t be recommending charges to the BC Prosecution Service.
Independent Investigations Office (IIO) spokesman Simon Druker said Monday that the IIO has returned the matter to the RCMP for review and to determine if “any further action is appropriate under the RCMP Act.”
The crash happened at about 10 p.m. on March 30, 2023. Druker said a Mountie was driving a vehicle, accompanied by a municipal police officer, when they observed a U-Haul truck in Surrey.
“A short time later, police came across the U-Haul truck which had been involved in a collision with three other vehicles on 80 Avenue near 176 Street, a white 2020 Land Rover, a white 2016 Kia Forte and a black 2006 Hummer H3,” Druker said. “The driver of the Kia sustained serious injuries in the collision. The IIO was notified of the incident on August 16, 2024 and began an investigation.”
The IIO press release didn’t reveal what role the police were alleged to have played, or not.
“The chief civilian director has now reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including medical records, police reports, video footage and witness accounts – and has determined that the IIO file will not be referred to the BC Prosecution Service,” Druker reported. This matter has been returned to the RCMP for review and to determine whether any further action is appropriate under the RCMP Act. The IIO investigation is now concluded.”
