If you’re into bikes, your social media feed has probably been taken over by Mountain of Hell. It happens every June. One minute you’re watching normal mountain bike content. The next you’re staring at over 20 minutes of FPV footage of hundreds of riders pinballing off each other while sliding down a glacier in France.

It’s equal parts race, survival test and internet gold. And if watching the carnage has you thinking, “You know what? I should do that,” follow the Montain of Hell FB page to find out when registration for the 2027 edition opens.

A race that starts on a glacier

Mountain of Hell takes place in Les Deux Alpes, France and has been testing riders since 1999. The concept is pretty simple; take more than a thousand riders. Put them at roughly 11,000 feet on the Glacier des Deux Alpes. Point them down a mountain and let gravity sort out the winner.

Over the next 25 kilometres riders will drop about 2,400 vertical metres. The terrain will go from snow to ice, to bike park trails, to loose rocks and everything in between.

The start is the main event

Mountain of Hell goes viral nearly every year because of the start. It’s a mass start. The horn goes and about 1000 riders drop in. For the first few kilometres, riders are riding down ski pistes, fighting through soft snow sections and sloppy mud. It would be terrifying to be involved in, but it makes for great FPV content.

Some riders stay upright. Many do not.

Fastest riders down the mountain

While most of the internet footage features snow, glaciers and crashes, this is actually a race. And in 2026 it was France’s Kimi Viardot took the win in 24:09.75, narrowly beating fellow Frenchman Damien Oton by just over 12 seconds after nearly 25 minutes of descending.

France’s Emilie Fer win the women’s division, who took 32:37.76 to get from top to bottom. Her compatriot,  Emilie Serre, finished three-and-a-half minutes later.

The website claims there were over 1000 riders, representing 27 countries that took part in the variouus events this year.

Not just for pros

The Mountain of Hell isn’t for Red Bull athlese and pros only. Yes, there are professional riders competing for the top spot, but there are also weekend warriors lining up. Which means anyone can do it. Are you gonna sign up for 2027?
