With news that the WNBA is adding games next season, Scripps Sports President Brian Lawlor tells my colleague Austin Karp that his network remains pleased with the package of Friday night games it has and likely isn’t looking to add more days of the week.
“We’re really good at that,” Lawlor told SBJ. “We’ve got a studio show set up. It’s become a marquee night for the league. They’re very comfortable putting together the best matchup of the weekend on a Friday night for national distribution. … I definitely see us continuing to own Friday night. If there are more games, there’s potential for another week or two of Friday nights.”
Lawlor noted with an expanded slate, each team may get one or two more national games, but “most of them are going to default to local” rights deals. That could be an ancillary win for Scripps, which has local rights to the Aces in the Las Vegas market.
