White Rock breaks 90-year hot weather record Monday

Mercury was rising in thermometers all over the province Monday, and White Rock was no exception, breaking a 90-year-old daily record for June 22.
The new record set Monday was 31 C, compared to the old record of 28.3 C set in 1936 — and there’s a chance the daily record for Tuesday (June 23) could also be broken, Environment Canada operating meteorologist Jennifer Kowal noted.
“As we can see outside, we’ve had a ridge of high pressure over the region for the last couple days. It’s been very hot,” she said, noting the daily record for June 23 is 25 C, also set in 1936.
“Today’s forecast for Southern Vancouver is a high of 24, except 31 inland. So you have a pretty good chance of seeing another daily record beat today,” Kowal said Tuesday morning.
While it was a record-breaking temperature, it wasn’t the hottest day White Rock has ever recorded, Kowal shared, recalling that nearly five years ago, the heat dome saw temperature records repeatedly broken across the province.
“So it reached 31 C (Tuesday), and that is very hot for that specific day, but in the grand scheme of White Rock’s records, that’s actually the 50th hottest day that it’s had,” Kowal said. “The hottest it’s ever been in White Rock was 38.5 C. That was almost five years ago during the heat dome in 2021 … it was on June 28, 2021.”
Moving forward, the forecast is expected to change, she continued.
“Yesterday and today were the highest days of the week. Then we’ve got a system coming in from the Pacific. It’s going to be moving in (and) sort of approaching on Thursday (June 25) and actually arriving in the Lower Mainland Friday and Saturday,” said Kowal. “So it’s still going to be sunny tomorrow (Wednesday) but just maybe be a little bit cooler … Thursday (there will) probably just be an increase in cloudiness throughout the day and we’re only expecting a high of 20 C, which is actually around the normal temperature for this time of year.”
On Friday, showers are forecast to begin, likely overnight, and remain a little “showery” through Saturday, which will be a welcome relief, she noted.
“I know that we love the hot weather, but we all know that we need this rain. A couple days of showers to fill up our reservoirs and get some water soaking into the ground is a really good thing for us right now.”
Weather records in White Rock have been kept since 1929.
