The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Trevor Harris-Kian Schaffer-Baker pass-catch combo could be dubbed Confection Air.
“They call me 7-Eleven,” Schaffer-Baker declared. “I’m open 24 hours. I’m always open.”
One week earlier, Schaffer-Baker had caught 11 passes for 165 yards in a 31-27 conquest of the visiting B.C. Lions.
The 19 catches put the sixth-year CFLer in a three-way tie for the most in franchise history after the first two regular-season games:
19 — Molly McGee, 1977.
19 — Ray Elgaard, 1985.
19 — Kian Schaffer-Baker, 2026.
17 — Lucius Floyd, 1992.
17 — Curtis Marsh, 2001.
17 — Weston Dressler, 2012.
16 — Craig Ellis, 1984.
16 — Curtis Marsh, 2000.
16 — Shawn Bane Jr., 2023.
15 — Don Narcisse, 1998.
Schaffer-Baker needs nine catches on Friday against the Toronto Argonauts (7 p.m., Mosaic Stadium) to tie Elgaard for the most receptions by a Roughrider over the first three games. (Tickets for Friday’s game are AVAILABLE HERE.)
Elgaard had 28 catches after three games in 1985. Molly McGee, with 26 catches at the three-game mark in 1977, is second All-Time.
In terms of receiving yards, Schaffer-Baker is second in team history after two games:
324 — Jeff Fairholm, 1993.
295 — Kian Schaffer-Baker, 2026.
279 — Ray Elgaard, 1985.
257 — Rhett Dawson, 1975.
251 — Ryan Smith, 2015.
240 — Joey Walters, 1982.
233 — Larry Thompson, 1994.
Schaffer-Baker needs 98 yards on Friday to tie the team record for receiving yards after three games:
393 — Ray Elgaard, 1985.
352 — Jeff Fairholm, 1993.
333 — Rhett Dawson, 1975.
317 — Hugh Campbell, 1965.
Naaman Roosevelt (2016) is fifth with 295 yards — Schaffer-Baker’s current two-game total.
The Roughriders’ No. 89 has already eclipsed his receiving-yardage total for all of last season. In seven games (including the 2025 Western Final and Grey Cup), he caught 21 passes for 260 yards.
Until this year, Schaffer-Baker’s previous best first-two-games totals were 14 catches and 161 yards, both in 2024.
He caught two touchdown passes in the Roughriders’ second game in 2024 and 2026.
In both cases, a teammate had caught three TD passes in the team’s opener — Shawn Bane Jr. (2024) and Samuel Emilus (2026).
After catching two second-quarter TD passes on Saturday, Schaffer-Baker was stopped on the one-yard line after his final reception. Tommy Stevens ran for a game-winning score on the next play.
Schaffer-Baker was 36 inches shy of giving Saskatchewan a player with three touchdown catches in back-to-back games.
There is only one precedent for such a feat. Hugh Campbell caught three TD passes in each of the 1966 Roughriders’ first two games.
The TD passes to Campbell were thrown by Ron Lancaster. His grandson, Marc Mueller, is in his third season as the Roughriders’ Offensive Co-ordinator.
SLINGIN’ FOR SIX SCORES
Lancaster (1966) and Tom Burgess (1989) hold the team record of eight. Harris (2026) and Darian Durant (2010) are tied with six. Two of Durant’s TD passes were in overtime.
The Roughriders’ record for TD passes over the first three games is 10 (Lancaster, 1966). Burgess (1989) is next in line with nine, followed by Durant with eight (2013).
Harris (2024) is one of six Roughriders to throw seven TD passes over the first six games, along with Durant (2010), Kent Austin (1992), Henry Burris (2000), Kerry Joseph (2006) and Kevin Glenn (2017).
WILLOUGHBY WEIGHS IN
Saskatoon-based historian/statistician Keith Willoughby was kind enough to send along the following nuggets:
• Counting from 1958 (the year in which the CFL was established), Saturday’s contest between Saskatchewan and Calgary was the 1,000th regular-season game in CFL history to be decided by three points or fewer.
• Saskatchewan has played in more games (247) decided by three points or fewer than any other CFL franchise. The Riders are 126-121 in those nailbiters.
• Saturday’s game was only the second in CFL regular-season history that ended with a 40-37 outcome. The only previous instance dates back to Aug. 18, 2005, when Calgary defeated the host Montreal Alouettes 40-37. Sandro DeAngelis settled matters with a 38-yard field goal on the final play. DeAngelis played in 13 games with the Roughriders in 2012.
• This is the 25th season since 1946 — the year in which the Saskatchewan Roughriders label was adopted — that the team has opened at 2-0. Saskatchewan has made the playoffs in 23 of the previous 24 seasons that began with two consecutive victories. The lone blemish was in 2022.
RIDERS ON THE “ROAD”
The Roughriders are technically the visiting team for a Regina-based game for only the second time.
On June 14, 2014, historic Mosaic Stadium was the venue for a pre-season contest between the Roughriders and Ottawa REDBLACKS. The game was played in Saskatchewan because stadium renovations rendered Ottawa’s facility, then known as TD Place, unavailable at the time. Saskatchewan emerged with a 21-14 victory to conclude the REDBLACKS’ first game of any description.
Saturday’s “home” game for the Argonauts is earmarked for Mosaic Stadium because Toronto’s BMO Field is booked for soccer’s World Cup.
