Calgary police are asking the public to help find a blue Hyundai Santa Fe that they say was used in an attempted extortion against a South Asian victim in the city.
Police say the threats began May 10. A victim living in the northeast community of Saddle Ridge got messages from an unknown person demanding money. Police say the suspect also sent a video of a shooting at a business that had nothing to do with the victim. They say it was meant to scare them.
The victim called police to report it. While they were talking to investigators, the victim got another message. Police say it contained a video of the victims home.
“Police immediately began investigating, while carrying out suppression efforts and safety plans to keep the victim and their family safe,” the Calgary Police Service said in a news release. Officers reviewed CCTV footage from the area and found a vehicle they believe was involved. Police say they have not been able to find the driver of the vehicle.
They describe it as a blue 2005 to 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe with tinted side windows. It has rust on the rear driver’s side wheel well and red tape on the driver’s side tail light.
The case is one of dozens in Alberta. Calgary police have said extortion attempts against the South Asian community began in January 2025. By June, the Calgary Police Service reported 46 extortion related incidents in the city, 19 of which involved shootings at homes, businesses or vehicles. Police say no one in Calgary has been hurt.
Police say anyone with information can call 403-266-1234. Tips can also go to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
