More charges approved for 2 men arrested in January shooting in Surrey

More charges have been approved for two men who were arrested and charged in connection with a January shooting in Surrey.
On Jan. 26, shortly before 4 p.m., Surrey Police Service Gang Crime Unit and Frontline officers assigned to Project Assurance — the SPS’s 24/7 response to extortion threats in Surrey — working in collaboration with SPS’s Major Crime Section, were in the area of 129 Street and 84 Avenue when they heard what they believed was a gun shot.
Project Assurance officers quickly located a suspect vehicle and stopped it, taking the driver and passenger into custody, an SPS release said.
During the arrests, a loaded handgun was discovered and seized.
SPS’s Major Crime Section took over the investigation, and on Jan. 27, two men were charged with Criminal Code offences:
Harshdeep Singh was originally charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present.
Hanspreet Singh was originally charged with one count of occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present, the SPS release continued.
In April, the SPS’s Extortion Response Team (ExRT) took lead on the investigation, and on Tuesday (June 23), more charges were approved by the BC Prosecution Service against both men.
Harshdeep Singh was charged with intentionally discharged a prohibit or restricted firearm into a place, knowing or being reckless.
Hanspreet Singh was charged with intentionally discharged a prohibit or restricted firearm into a place, knowing or being reckless, as well as possess a loaded firearm, SPS said.
Both Harshdeep Singh and Hanspreet Singh are foreign nationals. They have been remanded in custody and their next scheduled court date is Thursday (June 25).
