The Eastern Brown Snake is a different story entirely. It’s found along the entire east coast of Australia, stretching from far north Queensland down through New South Wales and into Victoria, and it’s comfortable in just about any habitat except dense forest. A council document from Mount Alexander Shire notes that its main food source is the house mouse, and with farmland and urban areas expanding, the species is being spotted more often around country towns and cities. That’s the key difference right there. Eastern Browns follow rodents, and rodents follow people. So as towns grow, the snakes end up closer to homes, sheds, and gardens, not because they’re seeking us out, but because that’s where their food supply lives now.
