The New York Mets are looking like a club that’s going to be a major trade deadline seller this summer, and while there’s still over a month until the trade deadline, they’ve already made a move.
Late Wednesday night, the Mets traded lefty pitcher David Peterson to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infield prospect Cole Mathis.
Now, the Mets have to ask a simple question: Who’s next to go in a trade? Well, according to MLB insider Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are reportedly not planning to continue selling after this Peterson trade, at least not yet.
Mets trade plan after David Peterson Cubs deal revealed
“The trade does not indicate that the Mets are staring a sell-off, according to people familiar with their plans who were granted anonymity so as to freely discuss the situation,” Sammon reports.
This is a noteworthy update from Sammon, as one would naturally expect the trade of Peterson to be a precursor to the Mets trading more players from their roster.
But, instead, it looks like a one-off trade to shake up the pitching staff after Peterson’s struggles this season.
He hadn’t been pitching well for the Mets this season, and moving on from him seemed like an obvious move.
It’s still a little unexpected that the Mets aren’t continuing to sell off their assets just yet, despite this team looking more and more like a clear seller.
Freddy Peralta and many other trade candidates will have to wait to be dealt, if the Mets are sellers at all this season, until closer to the trade deadline.
Even at 34-46, the Mets are under 10 games out of a postseason spot, and could make up the difference between now and the August 3 trade deadline.
If they don’t, the Mets continuing their sell-off would make a lot of sense. But, for now, the Mets aren’t expected to continue their fire sale following the Peterson deal.
