A two‑term Calgary councillor’s attempt to shift from City Hall to the provincial legislature has fallen short.
Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean lost the United Conservative Party nomination in Calgary‑Shaw to Mike Derry.
McLean entered the race earlier this year after announcing he hoped to replace outgoing MLA Rebecca Schulz. Schulz officially stepped down from the legislature on May 15.
McLean was narrowly defeated Wednesday by Calgary‑born oil and gas executive Derry, who won the contest by roughly 70 votes.
McLean was first elected to council in 2021 and secured a second term representing Ward 13 in last October’s municipal election.
He previously sought the UCP nomination in 2018, losing that race to Schulz.
