Penticton honours Canada’s veterans with new painted crosswalk

A new painted crosswalk to honour and remember Canada’s armed forces can now be found in downtown Penticton.
It’s at the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Veterans Way, and comes after Coun. Jason Reynen requested its installation in a successful notice of motion last fall.
A budget of $15,000 was approved for the project, which was developed in partnership with the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
“Penticton is proud to recognize the service and sacrifice of our veterans in a meaningful and lasting way,” said Mayor Julius Bloomfield. “This crosswalk stands as a visible reminder of the courage and dedication of those who have served our country, and the gratitude our community holds for them.”
The crosswalk is near Penticton’s cenotaph (100 Main St.), the home of the city’s annual Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11.
Elaine Potter, president of the Penticton Legion, said the local branch approached the city with the idea to install the crosswalk.
“We’re grateful for the city’s support in bringing this vision to life,” Potter said. “It’s a meaningful way to honour veterans, educate future generations, and remind our community of the importance of remembrance.”
In a release, the city said it worked closely with the legion “to ensure the design appropriately reflects the significance of remembrance while complementing the surrounding public space.”
It also encouraged residents and visitors to take a moment and honour Canada’s veterans when passing by.
“A meaningful tribute in the heart of our community,” the city added in a social media post.
