Whitby’s mayor is speaking out after a young child was recently injured by a coyote.

Mayor Elizabeth Roy says she was concerned when she heard about the incident. She didn’t share the details, but said her thoughts are with the child and their family. She also wished the child a full and quick recovery.

Roy went on to share she’s already added coyote safety to the agenda for the next Community Safety Roundtable, which brings together Durham police, town staff, school boards and other partners to tackle important safety issues.

She says Whitby already has a strong coyote monitoring mechanism. The town has an online reporting tool and a public coyote sightings dashboard that residents use a lot and provide information that helps town staff monitor activity and respond appropriately.

Roy says there’s always room to build on what’s working and the upcoming roundtable will be an opportunity to collaborate on additional measures.
