Winnipeg police say they are dealing with an increased amount of drug use and drug trafficking in public locations.
Due to the increase, police say they’ve also seen an increase in public complaints and concerns regarding public safety.
Police say they are working to target those who are profiting from addiction.
“But we also know enforcement alone is not the solution,” said WPS in a statement. “Despite these efforts, drugs continue to reach our streets, and the impacts are visible. Open drug use is occurring in public spaces and it’s not something our community should have to accept. It affects safety, public health, and quality of life. And we must respond.”
With this, WPS says they have increased its presence in the most affected neighbourhoods, based on crime data, mapping, and emerging trends.
WPS says since they’ve started the increased presence, they’ve already had 100 interactions with people using drugs, 25 people have been arrested, and three people have been taken to the Protective Care Centre.
