LETTER: Migrant workers in Surrey deserve protection

As a Surrey resident and university student, I have recently uncovered more about the experiences of migrant workers in our community. What is most surprising is how dependent many workers can be on a single employer for their income, housing, and immigration status given the closed work permit system.
Most of us would find it impossible to report unsafe conditions or unfair treatment if doing so could cost us our livelihood, our citizenship status, or our housing. Yet this is the exact reality that many migrant workers in our very own community face. While these workers help support vital industries and services throughout the Lower Mainland, many are being exploited.
Many employers follow the rules and treat employees fairly. However, when exploitation does occur, workers should feel safe reporting it without fearing serious consequences.
Surrey prides itself on being a diverse city. Living up to that reputation means paying attention to the challenges faced by some of the most vulnerable members of our workforce. Greater awareness and accessible support services would be a step in the right direction.
