‘Botanical forms, stars’ eyed to grace South Surrey pottery studio

A colourful “portrait of the community and the people behind it” could soon grace the exterior walls of the Crescent Park Pottery Studio.
According to a corporate report coming to Surrey city council Monday (June 29), officials with the city’s parks, recreation and culture department are recommending council authorize staff to engage artist Jillian Mundy to implement a public art mural at the studio, which has been operated by Semiahmoo Potters Society since 2022.
Describing the studio as an important place for sharing knowledge and skills, the report states the mural “will help revitalize the facility and mark the studio as a creative space.”
The artist and design were determined through an open artist call and a two-stage community selection process, the report continues.
Forty-three expressions of interest and six concept proposals were reviewed in the process, with a selection panel ultimately voting unanimously to recommend Mundy’s design.
It’s described as celebrating “craft, community, and the relationship between the studio and the park.”
“Botanical forms intertwine with ceramic vessels inspired by the potters who work within the studio. Some pieces are drawn directly from real works made in this space, while others are original designs, turning the mural into a portrait of the community and the people behind it,” the report continues.
“The floral designs spill across the facade with a sense of abundance and movement, echoing the way creative practice can overflow its boundaries. Small stars and sparkles suggest moments of inspiration and the quiet magic of shared making.”
Mundy is a self-taught artist with projects completed at sites including the Chilliwack Mural Festival and the Glastonbury Mural Trail in the United Kingdom.
Funding for the mural project – $40,000 – is to come from the Public Art Program.
