Edmonton picked Rudolfs Berzkalns with its first pick. I like him, but he’s no sure thing. Other than him, there’s no other prospect in this class I’m excited about.

Analysis: Berzkalns is a clear NHL-caliber athlete. He’s a big, strong center with good foot speed and the ability to overpower junior defenders. He has direct skill and can beat opponents one-on-one. He’s not overly creative with the puck, and the way he attacks is basic. His two-way play and effort level are good enough, though, that he could become a useful bottom-six forward/depth player.
84. Malcom Gästrin, F, MoDo Hockey U20 (U20 Nationell)

Analysis: Gästrin is a hardworking forward. He has good feet and can put pressure on opponents. His skill level is OK, but not great, and it’s not clear what his role would be in the NHL given his average-sized frame.
