One person is dead after a fire at a North York high rise residential building early Sunday morning, said police.
Emergency responders attended a call around 1:58 a.m. for reports of a fire inside an apartment unit in the building near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue E., said Toronto police on social media.
Fire crews arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming out of a unit, which prompted them to upgrade the incident to a 2 alarm fire, according to Toronto Fire.
Firefighters were able to quickly put the fire out, but found one person in the unit, they said. That person was not removed from the unit and was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner, said Toronto Fire.
They said there was no indication of anyone else living in that unit.
Toronto paramedics said two people with minor injuries and one person with serious, non-life threatening injuries were taken to hospital. Toronto Fire said one of them was a firefighter and the other two were residents from other units.
Toronto Fire said the firefighter’s injuries were minor and that they have been released from hospital.
Fire crews are still on scene for a fire watch, they said. Investigators and the Office of the Fire Marshal have been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
