While no Swift Current Broncos or local players were selected in the 2026 National Hockey League Entry Draft, southwest Saskatchewan still had a connection as the grandson of Val Marie native and Hockey Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier was chosen over the weekend.
Edina, Minnesota’s Parker Trottier was selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the 189th overall pick in the sixth round on Saturday.
Prospect continues development path
The six-foot-one left winger has spent the past two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. He appeared in 24 games in the United States Hockey League last season, recording eight goals, six assists and 14 points, along with 38 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating.
Now 18, Trottier was selected by the Regina Pats in the first round, 12th overall, of the 2023 WHL U.S. Priority Draft. He is committed to the University of Notre Dame for the 2027-28 season.
He finished the year ranked 79th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
Following a Hall of Fame legacy
Parker’s grandfather, Bryan Trottier, spent 18 seasons in the NHL with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Trottier won four consecutive Stanley Cups with the Islanders from 1980 through 1983 before capturing two more championships with Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992.
The Hall of Fame forward finished his career with 524 goals, 901 assists and 1,425 points in 1,279 regular-season games, adding 184 points in 221 playoff appearances.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997. The Val Marie product was also part of the inaugural class of the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012, the inaugural class of the Swift Current Broncos Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame later that same year.
