The New York Yankees host the Detroit Tigers to start their final series of the season on Monday night. The Yankees took the series in Detroit just a week ago. The Tigers won the opener, but the Yankees came right back to win back-to-back and the series. Neither team fared well since that series. Detroit lost three of four to the Houston Astros over the weekend, and the Yankees were swept in four straight games against their hated rival, the Boston Red Sox. Detroit has lost five of its last six games after winning four straight. The Tigers have struggled tremendously on the road this season with a 12-28 mark, which has led Detroit to a 35-49 record overall. Besides trying to avoid losing five straight tonight, the Yankees are 3-8 in their last 11 games and have fallen back to second in the AL East standings after leading for much of the month. New York now trails the Tampa Bay Rays for first place by a game with a 48-35 record, and a 22-15 mark at home. Both teams are trying to bounce back from losses in 10 innings in their series finales on Sunday, but New York has the best odds with a -148 line at home. Ryan Weathers will start for the Yankees with a 3-5 record and 3.95 ERA in 86.2 innings pitched. Detroit will counter with Casey Mize. The righty has a 2-5 record but has a 2.95 ERA over 58 innings.

The Yankees are coming off one of the most rollercoaster games of the season on Sunday Night Baseball against the Red Sox. New York nearly pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks of the season. The Yankees were no-hit for 8.1 innings on the wrong side of a tremendous start by Sonny Gray against his former team. Amed Rosario broke up the no-no for Gray, who also struck out nine to reach 2,000 in his career. The Yankees kept rallying, though, and tied the game at two runs apiece off Aroldis Chapman. They were helped by a throwing error from right fielder Wilyer Abreu, and then scored two more in the 10th with another throwing error by Abreu. Ultimately, though, Boston prevailed by scoring three runs in the bottom of the 10th, with Jarren Duran hitting the walk-off RBI single. It was Boston’s first four-game sweep of the Yankees since 2018.

Detroit also lost in 10 innings in its finale against the Astros, but the Tigers fell 7-5 at home. Both teams headed into extras with just three runs apiece. Detroit held a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer by Zach McKinstry in the second. But Houston had two homers across the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game. Christian Walker hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run top of the 10th inning to put Houston over the top. Detroit scored two in the bottom of the inning with a two-run shot by Spencer Torkelson, but that was where the Tigers’ rally ended.
