In a weekend where more than one international competition was on many people’s minds, a local ‘international’ team won a tournament title at a South Surrey golf course.
In a two-day competition that has been on the Nico Wynd Men’s Club schedule since 2007, the International team led from wire to wire and claimed the trophy on Sunday (June 28), according to an email from men’s club media relations director Ross Ruddick.
The contest was roughly modeled on the formats in both the Ryder and President’s Cups, Ruddick noted, with four 9-hole segments completed by ‘Canadian’ and ‘International’ teams selected from the Nico Wynd Men’s Club membership and divided by established handicaps.
Saturday play featured two-man match play on the front nine with head-to-head stroke play on the back nine. In contrast to recent years, the International team took a 20 to 16 lead heading into Sunday play, Ruddick said.
The front nine on Sunday was a two-man alternate shot format followed by a second, head-to-head net stroke play battle on the back nine.
Perhaps distracted by following the Canada/South Africa match on their smart phones, the Canadian team failed in the comeback attempt and the final tally was 39.5 points for the Internationals and 32.5 for Canada, Ruddick continued. This convincing win helped the International team to improve their historical record to nine cups compared to Canada’s 11.
With the golf competition over, both teams enjoyed their burgers and beverages while watching the end of the nailbiter Fifa World Cup game between Canada and South Africa, with everyone cheering that outcome. The winning International team proudly displayed their Nico Cup with plans to continue their outstanding play in 2027.
The weekend also saw the presentation of a cheque in the amount of $4,550 by Saturday men’s captain, Graham Roberts, to Brent Lindberg, chair of BC Golf in Zone 3. The funds will go to support junior golf in our local zone and increases the men’s club’s total contributions to more than $70,000 since this campaign was started, Ruddick shared.
Two more major competitions remain on the Club’s 2026 schedule: The Senior Men’s Club Championship is scheduled for July 21 and 23, while the Saturday Club members face off in their club championship Aug. 15-16.
The Club Championship trophy is the most coveted piece of hardware among the members, Ruddick noted.
