From freezing ice baths to gruelling long-term exercise challenges, it can be tricky to stay up to date with all the fitness longevity trends out there.
However, the secret to a longer life could be much simpler, with one muscle group in particular the key to looking after yourself.
Lower strength in the leg muscles can increase the risk of death by up to 65 per cent and holistic health coach, Emily Spurling, told Today the simple act of moving around can have great benefits.
“The legs are so important and the main reason it keeps us well is it prevents falls,” she said.
“In older adults falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and strong legs also mean really strong muscles, so the sheer mechanics of the muscle pulling on the bone increases bone density.
“And blood sugar regulation is the other amazing thing, so we don’t get type 2 diabetes or obese.”
For those interested in testing and improving their leg strength, Emily has developed a four-week guide that you can download here.
“That will give you a four week progressive overload training,” she said.
“And you can just start with body weight and there is also a protein guide as well.”
