Surrey buying $3.2M fire truck

Surrey council has instructed city staff to buy a Ladder Quint fire truck for $3,272,516.80 from Safetek Emergency Vehicles Ltd.
The spending limit is set at $3.5 million.
“The new Quint will replace a unit which is at the end of its service life, has been fully depreciated and will be twenty years old by the time the replacement unit arrives,” Brian Edwards, Surrey’s general manager of public safety, explained in a corporate report.
”The new Quint can provide immediate intervention at incidents requiring medical, fire ground-related emergencies, elevated personnel rescues, and elevated fire suppression.”
Council approved the purchase on June 29.
Councillor Doug Elford noted that the last time city hall bought a fire truck “it was quite a delay on the delivery.”
“Has that improved in recent time?” he asked Edwards. “Because if I recall, it was quite a fair amount of time before it actually arrived.”
Edwards said this particular industry has seen increased delivery timelines since the pandemic, though they “have come down a little bit but not back to the level seen before COVID.”
“The estimated delivery time for this truck would be two to 2.5 years,” Edwards told council.
Councillor Rob Stutt asked him if a Quint is “versatile.”
Edwards replied that a Quint is a combination of a typical fire truck and a ladder truck.
Stutt asked if the truck being replaced will remain in service. Edwards said the replaced truck may be used as a training truck “but it’s beyond its front-line service life.”
