Winnipeg residents planning to run for city council or a school board in this fall’s municipal election can now officially begin the process, with candidate registration opening June 30.
The City of Winnipeg says anyone seeking election as a city councillor or school trustee must register in person with the senior election official before beginning any campaign activities.

This year’s election marks the first time school trustee candidates are required to register and comply with campaign spending limits, following recent changes to Manitoba’s Public Schools Act.
The City Clerk’s Department is accepting registrations on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays. Prospective candidates are encouraged to book an appointment in advance and ensure all required information is included with their registration forms.
Under election rules, candidates cannot raise campaign funds, accept donations, or spend money on their campaigns until they have officially registered.
The city will publish and regularly update the official list of registered candidates on its election website as applications are received.
Key election dates
The deadline to register as a candidate is Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 4:30 p.m.
Winnipeg voters will head to the polls on Wednesday, Oct. 28, to elect the city’s next mayor, councillors, and school trustees.
The city is also encouraging residents to confirm they are on the voters list before the election. Eligible voters who are not yet registered can add their names now to ensure they receive a voter information notice before election day.
