Speculation started running rampant online when staff from Costco’s Sudbury store came to the Sault earlier this month
A Costco in Sault Ste. Marie is not a sure thing yet, but it sounds like the company wants to open a location here by 2030.
SooToday started looking into rumours that a Costco might be coming to the city when a new store was announced in Thunder Bay and several other stores in southern Ontario.
And then speculation started to run rampant online when staff from Costco’s Sudbury store came to the Sault earlier this month to sell memberships at the Spring Fling in Clergue Park.
An employee from the membership team told SooToday by phone that the company is looking into the Sault, with a potential opening in 2030, but nothing is set in stone yet.
SooToday also contacted Costco’s head office, but no one responded by deadline.
According to Insauga, Costco often won’t comment publicly on new stores until about three months before they open.
SooToday contacted Peak Construction, listed on this sign in Thunder Bay, but they said they have no knowledge of any plans for Sault Ste. Marie.
In 2024 on April Fools’ Day, Eythan Henson shared a digitally-altered image of a Station Mall sign that made it look like a Costco would be coming to the city.
Today Henson said the reason that image went viral was because people really want a Costco here.
“Cost of living has people looking for cheaper places to shop, and a lot of people here already drive to Sudbury for Costco.”
Henson said he would definitely shop there regularly if Costco opened in the Sault.
“When I lived in Sudbury, I shopped there on a weekly basis.”
A petition with more than 3,600 signatures shows that people definitely want a Costco here.
You can also count Mayor Matthew Shoemaker as someone who would gladly see a store open in the Sault.
“We are constantly exploring opportunities for new businesses in the community. We would welcome Costco and believe they’d be well received locally,” Shoemaker said.
